Schevchenko also offered humorous personal anecdotes from his experience as a former FLEX exchange student, a journalist, and active parliamentary member.

Dr. Bohdan Oryshkevich, the founder of USA/USA, also a Harvard and Columbia alumnus, was honored for 15 years of service to the program since its birth under its parent non-profit Coordinating Committee to Aid Ukraine. Dr. Oryshkevich spoke briefly about the achievements of the program’s 300+ participants and alumni, many who are successful in their fields and chose to pass on their knowledge through community service and volunteer work for USA/USA back in Ukraine.

International Charitable Fund “Ukraine 3000,” a Ukraine-based non-profit whose goal is to help Ukraine build up her own future and fulfill her global mission, sent its support with written words of encouragement to the program. The letter stated that Ukraine 3000 “is interested in the opportunities for the talented Ukrainian students to study in the best educational establishments of the world.”

Featured Ukrainian-themed art included photography from USA/USA students, 3 shorts from Ukrainian filmmakers Oleksandra Khrebtova, Anatoliy Lavrenishin, and Bohdana Smyrnova (who also filmed the event), pottery from Kyla Toomey, jewelry from Oddfishie Designs, and prints from Pattie Peck Harrelson. The photography, scenes of Ukraine from Lviv, to the mountainous western countryside, to the Crimea, will be shown again at the Ukrainian Institute on Sep. 27, at the fair of the Ukrainian Community Organizations.

The event raised over $100,000 in donations, according to Yevheniya Krutko, USA/USA Program Coordinator. Local community sponsors included Self-Reliance New York Federal Credit Union, Ukrainian Institute of America, and Baczynsky East Village Meat Market. The USA/USA also thanks an anonymous alumnus, Christine Balko Slywotzky, Adrian Slywotzky, Wolodymyra Slywotzky and Stefan Slywotzky for their generocity and kindness towards Ukrainian students and the USA/USA.

Bohdana Smyrnova shooting footage at the USA/USA event
